The BC Attorney General's office is still trying to have the case removed so that it will never be heard by a BC Supreme Court Judge. The date that this will be argued has once again been delayed until the week of February 18, 2008 when two (2) days will be scheduled for the Province to argue that homeless people do not have a right to challenge a bylaw which prevents people from sleeping outside on public land.

Constitution Challenged by AGBC

A motion to strike the constitutional issue regarding sleeping outside will be heard by a BC Supreme Court Judge on January 9th and 10th in Victoria, BC.

The Attorney General of British Columbia has an application before the court to have constitutional issues on homelessness, pleading to be struck down. This point will be argued on Wednesday January 9, 2008 at 9:45am in the BC Supreme Court House at 850 Burdett Ave. between Blanchard & Quadra St. The public is welcome and is encouraged to attend to show interest in this important case.

The city of Victoria has a population of 75,000 people yet there were 1,200 homeless people counted in February 2007.

The rising cost of rent, lack of affordable housing, and only 170 shelter beds available means that over a thousand people have nowhere to sleep.

Two years ago police evicted homeless people from Cridge Park.

Why won't the city see them in court?

One could pass Cridge Park a dozen times without noticing it, but it
is at the centre of a court case that could reorder how we look at
public places and how we treat the homeless.
