This may be the last homeless action of the holiday season.
All day Friday (December 21st) there will be a homeless memorial event at Oppenheimer Park. It is the winter solstice and the International Day for the Memorial for the Homeless.
It is most important that people show up around 1:00 pm Different groups will be handing out food and clothing as their part to contributing to the event.

City hotel policies could increase homelessness by 1000s

Carnegie Action Project update:

City hotel policies could increase homelessness by 1000s

The City of Vancouver’s Single Room Accommodation (SRA) bylaw is not protecting residential hotel rooms for low income people. It also appears to be getting ready to gut or end the bylaw entirely, thus forcing single people on welfare to find nonexistent housing in other parts of the city for $375 a month.

HOTELS MAY BE CONDOS SOON

HOTELS MAY BE CONDOS SOON
Published in Carnegie Newsletter, December 1, 2007

Here’s some bad news. Soon, the City of Vancouver Mayor and Council will
talk about letting property developers convert hotels into Condos as early
as 2008! That means possibly 1000's more people will be made homeless in
Vancouver.

It’s a complicated story and you have to be a lawyer to figure it out what
they are planning, but read on and see if this explanation makes sense.

News release
For immediate release
October 22, 2007

Build social housing units, United Nations representative tells Canada

United Nations Special Rapporteur on Housing, Miloon Kothari, says
Canada should "once again embark on a large scale building of social
housing units across the country" for a period of ten years. Kothari
made his remarks in a preliminary report, after touring Canada for 2
weeks.

On this U.N. mission, Kothari says he "heard of hundreds of people who
have died as a direct result of Canada's nation-wide housing crisis."
