parks exclusion ordinance

2008.01.24 - 3:48 PM

from Seattle Wa:it is winter outside, the shelters are full, and our city is making it a crime to survive. Those living outside in parks or greenbelts have had their survival gear destroyed or thrown away without being offered any assistance or warning.A month ago, we demanded that the city state a clear, consistent, and compassionate policy on encampments clearances. Instead, they gave us this:Vague promises of police backed outreach and additional shelter with no commitment and no funding. A refusal to halt the clearances until shelter is available. Extending the parks exclusion ordinance to bar sleeping on all city property,no matter how urban or remote. Issuing broad deputy powers to give citations to those who are in violation. Summarily destroying any blankets, coats tents and sleeping bags that may be contaminated with unknown substances. We have less two weeks to demand changes.Say something.Join us at the public hearing Monday,January 28,from 6-7:30 PM.And call 206-441-3247 for more information on how to help.
