There are several means by which dwellings can become infested with bedbugs. I had bed bugs in Montreal and it SUCKED. The only way we managed to get rid of them was to stick all of our clothing, bed covers etc outside in the cold for 2 weeks, and then seal every crack of the house, and then have exterminators in. We were lucky we lived in Montreal, and that it happened in the winter, because the cold really does kill the little fuckers. Do NOT underestimate these things!

Basically, heat kills them. You can take your clothes dry cleaning or use a steam cleaner. You can even get them from hotels, which is kind of scary. A short one night visit to a hotel could basically get you infested.
This is so creepy, I hope I'll never live in a house infested by bedbugs or cockroaches. If I'd ever see a cockroach crawling from underneath the bathroom sink, that would be the end of my bathroom vanities.
