Homelessness and the Internet
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the site. I'm a college student in the U.S. and am doing a project (for going on two years now) devoted to the role of the Internet within the homeless community. I've been e-mailing some bloggers on here individually, but I thought posting a blog of my own may be a better way to get some feedback. So, please post your comments.
Here are the questions I've been asking, but feel free to add anything you want:
Could you tell me why you started blogging and what it means to you (what is your purpose, etc.)?
In your opinion, why are the Internet and blogging important for the homeless community?
How are blogging and the Internet being used, and are they viable public forums for you, and others, to voice your opinions on an issue that is often misconstrued and stereotyped within the traditional media?
Let me know if you have any questions about my research. Thank you in advance for your responses.
-Dave

I just was explaining to someone the work that I'm doing and I mentioned this site. His response was, "Homeless people have a Web site?" This is the reason that I'm doing this project. You'd be surprised at how many people have a similar response and have no idea that homeless people do use the Internet -- and usually the same way housed people do. My research started in part as a result of my learning that the Boulder homeless shelter had a computer lab, but none of the computers were working. So, I decided to put together some research showing how and why the Internet IS being used within the homeless community. On a small scale, my goal is to get Internet access at the Boulder shelter. On a larger scale, I would hope that Internet access would eventually be available in most shelters. Hopefully this helps put my work into context.
Hey Dave,
Looks like you're on the right site - welcome! I'm an outreach worker in Victoria, BC and I can assure you that people find this site a very good tool to voice their concerns, desires, frustrations, you name it and I hope it will continue to thrive - until, of course, we won't have as many people living on the street...

Hello !
I work at a Homeless Day Centre in Cricklewood, London UK. We have www available all the time we are open Mon-Sat. We also give training in IT, so with a bit of encouragement we have found that about 80% of people either can or want to use the www.
I'm in the process of building a new website for our charity as our present one is outdated, we will include blogs, forum & later hopefully cam facilities, because this is the way forward, another aid to helping empower our homeless friends.
The HN website is a brilliant example of using modern technology to spread news/info/help not only amongst the homeless themselves but reaching out to different communities etc around the world.
