A 17-year-old who had been ordered to leave Nickelsville became hostile when police arrived Sunday, assaulting and threatening officers, police said.
But department spokeswoman Renee Witt said she was not aware of problems at the current University District encampment - referred to as Tent City by some officers.
“This is the first incident that I’ve seen come through basically since they’ve been at that location,” she said.
The encampment, which has more than 50 people in fuchsia-colored tents, has been staying in a University Christian Church parking lot since mid-October.
Supporters of Nickelsville said the camp might move later this month to the University Congregational United Church of Christ in the 4500 block of 16th Avenue Northeast — about two blocks from its current location.
The relocation of Nickelsville, which has more than 50 residents living in donated fuchsia-colored tents, would be the fourth since the encampment was unveiled Sept. 22 with 150 tents in an industrial area near the Duwamish River.
“We’ve had a few incidents here and there at some of the other locations,” Witt said. “But again, this is the first at this particular location.”
In early October, a man who had been staying at Nickelsville called police complaining he had been booted from the camp for drinking beer.
After the threat of legal consequences, the University Christian Church applied for a temporary-use permit on Nov. 14. But the application is under review and the permit would not be issued before the planned move, expected by Dec. 5, Department of Planning and Development spokesman Alan Justad said.
Nickels, whose spokeswoman did not return a call for comment, has been critical of those camping in Nickelsville – drawing harsh criticism and skeptical questions from homeless advocates.
“Let’s understand the folks that are there are not necessarily homeless,” he said in an Oct. 22 interview on The Seattle Channel. “…There are folks who believe that we should turn parks and greenbelts over to this group of folks to have Shantytowns or additional tent cities, and I just disagree with it. I think that the focus needs to be on housing people in real housing.”
Homeless Conference Victoria Spring time anyone?
