Racial Profiling by Montreal Police
Montreal police target black youth, according to a new study.
Authored by UQAM's Christopher McAll and Léonel Bernard, the study shows that black teenagers, between 12-18 years old are over 4 times more likely to be stopped and questionned by the police and twice as likely to be arrested, compared to white youth in the same age category.
From the Montreal Gazette:
The study proves police are not applying the law equitably, McAll said.
"They have the obligation to ensure that the law is respected, but they are putting themselves above the law," he charged.
"The question is, who is going to police the police?" he added.
Keep in mind - the arrests are justified - but the trouble stems from the fact that black youths are monitored more closely be the police. Black youth aren't necessarily more likey to commit a crime but are more likely to get caught if they do. Whites teens aren't watched as closely and are more likely to get away with small infractions.
While this study only compares "whites" to "blacks", it's reasonable to assume that the same might hold true for ethnic minorities and other marginalized groups - like the homeless.
Hopefully public interest in this study and the involvement of human rights' groups as well as the media will help change the culture of the police force.
While officers face a difficult, stressful and often dangerous job they must also realize that there actions can have huge impacts not only on individuals but on whole communities.
