Why attack the volunteers? verbally or physically (usually verbally).
Dear guests of the shelter. The main reason why people would volunteer at a homeless shelter is a) They are serving time for community b) giving a damn about fellow human beings, and want to alievate their comfort to dignified (ie clean clothes, food, and a place to clean (shower). c)They are earning hours towards some quota, example (Duke of Edinburgh Award (Congressional Youth Award in the States) or for nursing or social work.
But why vent your furstrations on us? We have no control of the crazy rules. And yes many rules are crazy I agree! hell my shelter sometimes don't have blankets. Can you believe that nobody wants to donate stuff, and supplies run thin?
There are stereotypes of homeless, that are unfounded and not true, but there they are, and many people don't want to come down. We do this yucky job, because we want you guys to have the benifits of being healthy and clean. so without us volunteers, who would give you guys food?
It's a rare thing that people would give up their free time, (time to rest, and recreation), to come down, to give help, no matter how small.... Young people would rather play X-box, and pretend they're imaginary solders shooting a Viet Congs (Battlefield Nam), Nazis (Battlefield 1942), and shoot imaginary terrorist (this latest battle field). Young people rather be advancing themselves, not bothering to help those who might have tripped. (not your fault guys). so go easy on us please... it really hurts to be yelled at, we're doing the best we can. We are amatures! and we would rather be saving up for a vacation... or watching a nice DVD. We volunteer, so that you guys can get some stress off, that you can get your daily standards of healthy living (Although I agree, soggy meatloaf isn't healthy at all).
So if you guys want to get angry.... get angry at the politicians who for the past 8 years, really screwed the world up! REALLY screwed the world up. We're doing the best we can with what little we have, to allow you guys to have dignity that you deserve as a human being living in the modern age.
Now if we act all surly and angry, believe me it's not at you, it's at the lack of resources, the lack of communication the organization has with volunteers, mainly the lack of resources, and we are left saying "duhhhh" what do we do. Sadly, imagination and creative micromanagement, has taken a backseat to this world of logic and straight direct linar thinking. (aka point A to B).
Infact, I had to remember to use a bread knife to slice bars of soap, into square quarters, because, we had no (hotel soap)..... or shampoo, or toothbrushes.... man are supplies getting really thin. They're just going to get thiner....
I'm truly sorry for that.
sincerely Shower-Clothing room king...
It said Vancouver, but I'm really from Calgary. It was the closest location avaiable.

The last time I voluenteered at the Old Mustard Seed (the downtown location). there were 2 knife fights.
and I have been verbally accosted many times something about unmatching socks.... Which really isn't my fault.
for the most part though, guests at the Seed are good. If it wern't for Enduroman (a comic that a guest is working on).... then, I wouldn't even be there, as I have school, and the Rotary club, and the Flames are playing...
speaking of the Flames. I can't believe that "Duras" (a strong but dishonourable Klingon warrior), Burtuzzi is playing for the Flames....
It sounds like your heart is in the right place, showerking. It's a good thing that you do by giving your time.
You're right - there's a lot of frustration being passed around. Sometimes it might (unjustly) come out as an outburst against you. That's what happens when people are marginalized, forgotten, harassed and made to feel less than human. We should all be venting to the government, the greedy, the mega-corporations, but sometimes the anger gets mis-directed.
We all have good days and bad days, each and everyone of us.
Keep up the good work and the good days will come.
Take care,
Chris.
P.S. Are you venting here because you're a disgruntled Flames fan? Maybe you should start watching the Habs :-)
Yes big ups to all the volunteers. Its a great way to give back to the community and once you get money out of the equation then one can perform duities truely on the basis of Love. From the heart. To give without expecting anything in return..Unconditional Love..I ran a free Vegetarian soup kitchen in Winnipeg some time back now but i remember the feeling of like Wow im really contributing here and im eating great food with the help of others all coming together.(the food was all donated by various food outlets and we had three locations for kitchen use.Served over 300 people a week and it ran for a year and a half.ON no budget\money so it can work without the big bucks...
cheers.

Cheering for the Flames is part of my master plan for revenge against the Edmontonians who rejected me. Other than that I would love to cheer for classic teams like The Canadiens.
Actually I have a soft spot for the Kings, or Ancient teams like the Devils, or the Red Wings. (brings be back in time to the 80s), but got bullied alot in Edmonton. And currently need the Flames...
Yea about the, money issue JH. The shelters do manage to run, it has for 20 years...
